  • 1 teaspoon Garlic Powder For savory aroma
  • 1 teaspoon Onion Powder To complement flavors
  • 1/2 teaspoon Red Pepper Flakes Optional for heat
  • 1/2 teaspoon Barbecue Seasoning For consistency in flavor
  • 1/4 teaspoon Cumin For earthy warmth
  • 1/4 teaspoon Salt Enhances flavors

Method

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F. Prepare a grill pan or large sheet pan with aluminum foil and fit it with a wire rack.
  2. In a small bowl, mix barbecue seasoning and brown sugar. Drizzle chicken pieces with olive oil and rub the mixture on all sides.
Cooking
  1. Place chicken skin side down on the rack and bake for 30 minutes.
  2. Sauté minced onion in a medium saucepan over medium-high heat with butter until softened, about 2-3 minutes.
  3. Add ketchup, pure maple syrup, light brown sugar, soy sauce, apple cider vinegar, liquid smoke, garlic powder, onion powder, red pepper flakes, reserved barbecue seasoning, cumin, and salt to the saucepan. Simmer on low heat for 15 minutes.
  4. Remove chicken and drain juices from the pan. Baste chicken with sauce, turn skin side up, and drizzle more sauce on top.
  5. Return chicken to the oven and bake for another 10-15 minutes or until juices run clear and internal temperature reaches 165°F.
  6. Broil chicken for 3-4 minutes until skin is charred and crispy.
Serving
  1. Remove from oven, brush with additional sauce, and let rest tented with foil for 10 minutes before serving.

Notes

Marinate the chicken in the seasoning and olive oil for a few hours or overnight for deeper flavor. Choose organic chicken for better taste. Adjust sweetness of sauce as preferred.
