Ingredients

Cookie Base
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, melted and cooled to room temperature Brings a rich, creamy texture
  • ½ cup packed brown sugar Adds depth and hint of molasses flavor
  • ½ cup granulated sugar For that perfect sweetness
  • ½ teaspoon sea salt Balances the flavors beautifully
  • 1 tablespoon pure vanilla extract Infuses a sweet aromatic essence
  • 1 large egg, at room temperature Helps bind the ingredients
  • 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour Ensures a tender and soft cookie base
  • ½ teaspoon baking soda For a slight lift and chewiness
Chocolate Chips
  • ½ cup milk chocolate chips or milk chocolate hearts For generous bursts of sweetness
  • ½ cup mini semisweet chocolate chips Creates delightful pockets of rich chocolate

Method

Preparation
  1. In a large bowl, combine melted butter, brown sugar, granulated sugar, and salt. Whisk the mixture until well combined.
  2. Add the vanilla extract and egg to the mixture. Whisk until the batter thickens and lightens in color.
  3. Sift the all-purpose flour and baking soda into the bowl. Reserve a few tablespoons of the milk chocolate chips for later and add the rest into the bowl. Gently fold the mixture until you no longer see dry flour.
  4. Scoop the dough into 14 large balls and shape each ball into a flat heart using your fingers.
  5. Press the reserved chocolate chips onto the tops of the cookies.
Chilling and Baking
  1. Chill the shaped hearts in the refrigerator for about 1 hour or in the freezer for 25 minutes.
  2. Preheat the oven to 355°F (180°C). Arrange the cookies on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
  3. Bake for 7-9 minutes, until the edges turn golden brown and the centers are slightly underbaked.
  4. Allow the cookies to cool on the baking pan for about a minute before transferring them to a cooling rack.

Notes

For a richer flavor, brown the butter instead of just melting it. Don't skip the chilling step; it helps maintain shape. Customize with nuts or dried fruits for a twist.
