Ingredients

For the Gravy
  • 1 lb Ground Sausage Choose a flavorful sausage that’s savory and aromatic.
  • 1/2 Cup All-Purpose Flour This helps thicken the gravy.
  • 2 Tbsp Unsalted Butter Adds a rich, buttery flavor.
  • 3 1/2 Cups Milk Whole or 2% milk works best.
  • 1 Tsp Ground Black Pepper A key spice that adds warmth.
  • 1 Tsp Sage Herb that complements the pork.
  • 1/4 Tsp Red Pepper Flakes Optional, for those who enjoy some heat.
  • 1 Pinch Salt Adjust according to your taste.
For the Biscuits
  • 12 Homemade Buttermilk Biscuits Fluffy and buttery, ideal for serving with gravy.

Method

Preparation
  1. Heat a large skillet over medium heat and brown the ground sausage for about 10 minutes until no pink remains.
  2. Add unsalted butter to the skillet and stir until melted and combined with the sausage.
  3. Sprinkle flour over the sausage mixture, stirring constantly for about a minute to form a roux.
  4. Slowly pour in the milk while stirring to prevent lumps; increase heat to bring to a gentle boil, then reduce heat and cook until gravy thickens, about 5 minutes.
  5. Season the gravy with ground black pepper, sage, red pepper flakes (if using), and a pinch of salt; stir to combine.
  6. Serve the sausage gravy generously over split warm biscuits.

Notes

For added nutrition, sauté some diced vegetables with the sausage. For a lighter option, use turkey sausage. Adjust spice levels to personal preference.
