Ingredients

Dry Ingredients
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour This versatile ingredient forms the foundation of your biscuits.
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder Essential for leavening, it helps the biscuits rise beautifully.
  • 1 teaspoon salt A pinch of salt enhances the overall flavors.
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar Balances the biscuit flavor and browns the surface nicely.
Wet Ingredients
  • ½ cup salted butter, frozen Key to achieving rich, flaky layers.
  • ¾ cup milk Adds moisture and contributes to a tender crumb.

Method

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 425 degrees F (220 degrees C).
  2. In a mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar. Whisk until evenly mixed.
  3. Shred the frozen butter into small pieces using a cheese grater.
  4. Stir the grated butter into the flour mixture using a fork until evenly distributed.
  5. Slowly pour in the milk while stirring until the dough just comes together, pulling away from the sides of the bowl.
  6. Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and press it down to about ¼ inch thick. Fold it in half and press down again. Repeat this step several times.
  7. Roll the dough out to about ½ inch thick and use a round cutter to shape the biscuits.
  8. Place the shaped biscuits on a large parchment-lined baking sheet.
Baking
  1. Bake for 13-15 minutes, or until edges are beginning to brown.
  2. Brush the tops with melted butter before serving.

Notes

For flakier biscuits, keep the butter very cold and avoid overworking the dough. You can experiment by adding herbs or cheeses for variety. For a richer flavor, substitute buttermilk for regular milk.
